Cameras,drones,robots

Video is far too big to send and far too useful to throw away. Read it where it is captured and send the sentence, not the footage.

The hardware

  • Fixed inspection and security cameras
  • Drones and survey aircraft
  • Mobile robots and forklifts
  • Agricultural machinery

What it has to work with

Memory
256 MB to 4 GB
Power
Battery, vehicle supply or power over ethernet
Connectivity
A thin uplink, shared with everything else on site
Missing
Bandwidth

What runs there

01

Inspection and sorting

Finding the defect, the damaged package or the diseased plant, frame by frame, at the speed the line actually moves.

02

Reading the world

Gauges, serial numbers, labels and signs, turned into a value another system can act on.

03

Navigation and avoidance

Understanding what is in front of the machine while it is still in front of it, with no round trip in the loop.

Why not the cloud

One camera at 1080p produces more data in a day than most sites can upload in a week. Sending frames away to be scored means paying for the link, the storage and the wait, and it means the machine stops being useful the moment the link does. The answer is a few bytes. The footage is gigabytes. Send the few bytes.
