Wearablesand sensors

Small enough to sit beside the sensor, and cheap enough in power that the radio can stay off.

The hardware

  • Watches and fitness bands
  • Earbuds and hearing aids
  • Medical patches and monitors
  • Toys and consumer sensors

What it has to work with

Memory
512 KB to 64 MB
Power
A small cell, charged once a day at most
Connectivity
Bluetooth to a phone, when the phone is in range
Missing
Anywhere for the heat to go

What runs there

01

Wake words and short commands

Listening continuously without waking a larger chip, and without a recording of the room ever leaving the device.

02

Signals from the body

Heart rate, sleep stages, gait and irregularities, read as they happen rather than batched up and posted later.

03

Small vision

A toy or a sensor recognizing what is in front of it, from a model measured in megabytes.

Why not the cloud

On a device this size the radio is the battery. Transmitting a reading costs far more energy than computing one, so a product that streams sensor data to a phone all day is a product that dies by the afternoon. Computing on the device and sending a conclusion once an hour is the difference between a day of use and a week of it.
